Sciatica
Small jelly-filled disks are meant to protect the space between vertebrae. When one of these disks bulges or breaks, it can push on a nerve. When itโs the sciatic nerve, pain runs from the buttock down one leg. This is sciatica.
Although the pain associated with sciatica can be serious, those cases that are caused by a herniated disk can clear up with treatment in a few weeks to months. People who have severe sciatica and serious leg weakness or bowel or bladder changes might need surgery.
๐ท Sciatica โ Background
Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down each leg. It typically affects only one side of the body and is often caused by compression or irritation of the nerve roots in the lower spine.
๐ Common Causes:
Herniated or slipped disc
Spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal)
Degenerative disc disease
Piriformis syndrome (muscle pressing on the sciatic nerve)
Spondylolisthesis (vertebra slipping out of place)
Trauma or injury to the lower back
๐ Typical Symptoms:
Sharp, shooting pain from the lower back down the leg
Numbness or tingling sensation in the leg or foot
Muscle weakness in the affected leg
Pain that worsens with prolonged sitting, standing, or movement
Difficulty walking or maintaining balance in severe cases
๐ Why Early Diagnosis and Treatment Are Important:
Early identification and treatment of sciatica can relieve symptoms, prevent long-term nerve damage, and improve mobility. Ignoring symptoms may lead to chronic pain and disability.
๐ Available Services May Include:
Consultation with orthopedic or neurology specialists
Physical therapy and strengthening exercises
Pain relief treatments (medication, nerve blocks, injections)
Advanced diagnostic tools (X-ray, MRI, CT scans)
Lifestyle and posture correction
Minimally invasive procedures or surgery if necessary
